In addition to journalism, from 2010 to 2015, I wrote and produced stories about refugees and the international response to refugee crises for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency. I was based at headquarters in Geneva for two years and was sent later to Beirut, traveling from there to Jordan, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia. My main job was to manage other journalists, photographers and videographers producing stories. This was part of an effort by the UN to raise the profile of the Syrian refugee crisis , by producing credible accurate pieces about individual refugees and what they were going through for publication on public media channels, such as the New Yorker, TIME, The Atlantic, the Guardian, al Jazeera, Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, as well as some of the UN’s own platforms– again, all with a view to raising the profile of the crisis for a global audience. They were used by the UN not simply to raise money but to highlight specific problems facing refugees, including discrimination, statelessness, epidemics, domestic violence.
